Lucy Fulford will be working on her literary non-fiction project on finding home in wartime, exploring internal displacement in Ukraine in a lyrical reflection of love and loss through the landscape. The exodus across Ukraine’s borders hides one of the greatest impacts of the war – the widespread displacement within the country, from the war generation of children born in cities far from where their parents call home, to split families separated by service or seeking safety, and twice-migrants, displaced from Donbas and then again by the full-scale invasion.
Journeying across Ukraine, this book uncovers the new lives people create under conflict and the memories and traditions they carry with them, lending a new perspective to a geography outsiders often see solely as scarred by war. Framed by individual stories, drawing on interviews across the country, the book uses the personal to draw out collective experiences, and map the broader shape of Ukraine at war through the lens of where people call home.
