Ukrainians are fighting for the freedoms that make good societies possible and contributing to professions, disciplines, and traditions of thought as they do so. INDEX is a new cultural and research institution that enables this work through the documentation of war and the facilitation of intellectual exchange with the broader world.
INDEX is an indicator, a collector, and an innovator. By cultivating and connecting initiatives that chronicle the war, providing fellowships for academics and practitioners from Ukraine and abroad, and creating a space where thought and action can thrive, INDEX helps us understand the past and present, and points towards the future.
INDEX is:
• Intellectuals, cultural practitioners, and changemakers who remain in Ukraine
• International scholars and authors, whose work will be enriched by exposure to Ukrainian contexts and access to local sources
• Individual and institutional keepers and producers of the complex, transdisciplinary archive of documentation projects related to the war
• Ukrainian veterans who need time, space, and support to turn their experience into knowledge which will serve communities in Ukraine and around the world
INDEX does:
• Intellectual exchange: we facilitate international collaborations between fellows and foster an environment of intellectual exchange through lectures, conferences, and publications
• Professional development: we offer workshops and tutorials to the broader INDEX community by Ukrainian and international experts
• Financial assistance: we counter precarity exacerbated by the war by supporting projects which otherwise would be at risk through grants and stipends
• Outreach: we engage with our networks through cultural programming and media collaborations
• Insights: we draw on the expertise of our community to provide context and guidance to international visitors committed to deepening their knowledge about Ukraine
• Space: we open our office in Lviv for visitors, fellows, and friends to converge and think together
