Mission
and Vision

Ukrainians are thinking and fighting to safeguard the intellectual, cultural, and civic freedoms that make open societies possible. Launched in Lviv in 2024, INDEX is an institution that enables this work by documenting Ukrainian wartime experiences and fostering intellectual exchange with the broader world. Facilitating the production of situated knowledge about Ukraine in global contexts, INDEX pursues justice – not confined to the sort of justice that the legal system can provide, but also encompassing historical and epistemic justice as stories are told and passed on.

INDEX is an indicator, a guide, a pointer. By cultivating and connecting initiatives that chronicle the war, providing fellowships for academics and practitioners from Ukraine and abroad, and creating a space where thought and action can thrive, INDEX helps us understand the past and present, and points towards the future.
