After its successful pilot season (September–December 2024), INDEX has been established as a fully independent NGO. The Institute for Documentation and Exchange team is excited to share our plans and perspectives for 2025.
We will continue building our work around two core activity strands reflected in the institution's very name: documentation and exchange.
INDEX continues supporting ongoing projects documenting the war, including the cross-institutional “Ukrainian Culture Makers Killed by Russia” monitoring, documentary and commemorative exhibitions in our premises, and publication of the monthly Narysy: INDEX Journals. We co-organise “The Most Documented War: Enacting Archives” symposium and co-edit the Stories of War book series.
INDEX keeps up active work in the area of intellectual exchange, including the Victoria Amelina Fellowship, the Visiting Scholar in Residence programme, and a variety of events aligned with our mission to empower the Ukrainian intellectual vanguard and share situated knowledge about Ukraine globally. In addition, we seek support for the launch of Veteran and Environmental Humanities Fellowship programmes in the second half of 2025.
Established in turbulent times, INDEX remains steadfast in its commitment to the cause of justice for Ukraine, and we are honoured to continue this work alongside our friends and partners.
INDEX is grateful to the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (IWM) for their invaluable support during our early days. We are pleased to continue our cooperation as partners on several joint projects. Meanwhile, the IWM will continue to award Documenting Ukraine grants and work towards conceptualising and establishing an archive for the materials generated within the programme.
We keep collaborating fruitfully with the Center for Urban History on the research and documentation of wartime experiences. In addition to the annual The Most Documented War symposium and resulting book series, we co-host joint research fellowships and co-organise public events.
INDEX’s documentation trips to the frontline and de-occupied territories are possible thanks to our partnership with PEN Ukraine, with whom we also work closely on the Victoria Amelina Fellowship, the monitoring of cultural losses, and outreach events within INDEX’s programme of residencies.
With Ukraine War Archive, the most comprehensive digital repository documenting Russia’s war in Ukraine, we explore joint research projects that leverage our combined resources and expertise, such as ensuring physical access points for the UWA materials in Lviv.
Having established more than fifty institutional connections since its launch in September 2024, INDEX is interested in expanding our existing partnerships with academic, cultural, and human rights organisations, and in exploring new ones.
