INDEX is Hiring: Accountant

INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange is a cultural and research centre in Lviv, established to strengthen the Ukrainian intellectual vanguard and deepen global knowledge about Ukraine. The Institute documents Ukrainian experiences of the Russian invasion and fosters international intellectual exchange through fellowships and residencies for researchers and cultural practitioners from Ukraine and abroad.

By promoting contextualised knowledge of Ukraine in a global context, INDEX pursues justice – not confined to the sort of justice that the legal system can provide, but also encompassing historical and epistemic justice as stories are told and passed on.

Currently INDEX is looking for an accountant to be responsible for the organisation’s full financial accounting and to maintain the financial sustainability and transparency of INDEX’s activities. The accountant will work closely with the Deputy Head of Finance and Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining accounting and tax records for the non-governmental organisation (NGO).

  • Preparing and submitting tax, financial, statistical, and other mandatory reports.

  • Tracking income and expenditure by categories, projects, and funding sources.

  • Managing payroll, annual leave, business trips, as well as payments for civil law contracts and sole traders (FOPs).

  • Handling accounts payable/receivable, banking and foreign currency transactions, and exchange rate differences.

  • Managing fixed assets, low-value assets, intangible assets, and inventories, including documentation of their movement and disposal.

  • Overseeing primary documentation, contracts, certificates of completion, registers, and supporting expenditure documents.

  • Preparing documentation for audits, inspections, and internal financial controls.

  • Participating in the improvement of financial procedures and collaborating with the team on financial support for projects.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics.

  • At least 2 years of experience as an accountant (experience in the NGO/third sector is an advantage).

  • Knowledge of Ukrainian tax legislation and reporting requirements for NGOs.

  • Experience in project-based accounting and working with various funding sources.

  • Strong attention to detail, responsibility, and a systematic approach to work.

  • Proficiency in Ukrainian; English at a level sufficient for working with documentation.

What we offer:

  • The opportunity to work in a dynamic Ukrainian institution and participate in international academic and cultural projects and events.

  • Engagement with the INDEX transnational community, working towards achieving justice for Ukraine.

  • A competitive salary.

  • A friendly, motivated team and the chance to be part of transformational processes in documentation and cultural interaction.

  • A cosy office in the centre of Lviv, equipped to operate during power outages.
